All Average Films Seen and Reviewed
August 10
Flickan som lekte med elden (The Girl Who Played With Fire) (2009) - The stakes are higher and the action more dense but much of the intrigue that made the first of the trilogy so interesting is missing here. There is a comparatively conventional plot line that becomes increasingly absurd as things progress. From a technical standpoint things are all good, though the performances seem flat and there is nothing that Lisbeth can do now to shock.
Average
Taking of Pelham 123 (2009) - A needless remake of the brilliant and suspenseful 70s classic. It’s not a terrible film, there is a lot to like and Tony Scott gets the pacing nice and tight, but it goes over the top and the new twist ending is a tiresome post 9/11 cliche.
Average July 10
Mammoth (2009) - Lukas Moodysson (Lilja 4-ever) offers up another thought provoking piece of cinema - this time with some heavyweight star support from Gael García Bernal and Michelle Williams (unfortunately not the best performances of either careers). The themes of this films stuck with me for days after viewing and I was quite affected by the way it attacks globalization and capitalism in such a legitimate way. The fatalistic exploration of the direction we are all heading is disturbing - we are out of balance and the only solution is to hold the course? Or maybe I am giving this film too much credit - whatever the case, it is a beautifully directed guilt-trip.
Average
Twilight (2008) - So this overwrought teen drama that I never thought I would be able to stomach turned out to be completely watchable. But also juvenile garbage. Just how the mass market likes it.
Average
Ong Bak 2 (2008) - Tony Jaa delivers another round of stunningly choreographed fight scenes. As expected the story isn’t up to much and most of the characters are so badly under developed that following the general thread can be difficult at times. But when it’s good it’s really good - even if it doesn’t know whether to take itself seriously or fall into parody.
Average
Away We Go (2009) - Well this is certainly the end of my interest in Maggie Gyllenhaal. But that's hardly much of a review. There's of lot of great ideas explored here by director Sam Mendes - at its simplest this is a mid-30s couple trying to find their place, both literally and figuratively. What's great is that the attempt is an honest and bittersweet look at becoming an adult and the concept of starting a family. Where it lacks is that the the two leads are so emotionally numb that the result is both uninteresting and soulless.
Average June 10
Kick-Ass (2010) - I’m really not in the target audience for this latest graphic novel adapted super-hero franchise. It’s a fun concept - an average teen/geek donning a costume and fighting crime - but doesn’t rise much above other offerings in this genre. It’s well choreographed entertainment, but the satire never reaches its potential, at which point things just descend into a generic shooting match.
Average May 10
Iron Man 2 (2010) - A largely forgettable sequel that takes everything fun and intelligent about the first film and replaces it with an absurd plot, irrelevant and confusing character distractions and redundant action sequences (sounds like a replay of my thoughts on Transformers 2). Mickey Rourke’s fitting performance makes the best of it, and there is much entertainment, but when the credits roll it’s just another wasted opportunity.
Average
Charlie & Boots (2009) - Quite adequately described as a great Aussie road movie with Crocodile Dundee and ‘that guy who played Kenny’ (Shane Jacobson). I think the older generation will get a kick out of this - it has its moments - and then there are other times when it feel like it was sponsored by the Australian Tourism Board.
Average April 10
The Proposal (2009) - It’s open slather for using Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock as an excuse to watch obviously lightweight chickflicks such as this. Or maybe I’m just a big Mary Steenburgen fan. Either way you get what you expect in this role-reversal romcom about at high-powered book editor and her assistant played by Ryan Reynolds.
Average March 10
Duplicity (2009) - When a film boast of a clever twisty tale with cracking dialogue and one-upmanship I go in expecting David Mamet grade shenanigans. That’s not quite what Tony Gilroy (The Bourne Trilomogology) was serving up here. I feel like even if I had it explained to me, I still wouldn’t find Julia Roberts' and Clive Owen’s strange fuedings interesting. There are moments of spark but it’s too clever for its own good.
Average
Brothers (2009) - Irish director Jim Sheridan (In America, In The Name of the Father) adapts a well regarded Danish film, Brødre, about the lives of two brothers, one of whom goes missing while serving in Afghanistan. This is a strong film with a great script, and I look forward to seeing the original, but the handling comes off a little shallow and melodramatic for my liking. A lot of great work was also undone by a hokey closing line and Bono singing.
Average
Alice in Wonderland (IMAX 3D) (2010) - Tim Burton puts a lot of imagination into an original interpretation but sometimes it feels like the creative minds of Carroll and Burton are at odds with each other. The visuals serve the fantasy well, though the 3D adds nothing to the experience, and much of what makes this enjoyable is seeing the characters and the costumes because the actual adventure is merely conventional.
Average February 10
Stanley Kubrick’s Boxes (2008) - As a huge Kubrick fan I was intrigued by the prospect of a documentary that promised to reveal further insight into his genius. However in this rather unsatisfying exposé we learn little more than the fact that Stanley had a staggering amount of boxes filled mostly with location shots for films (including some which never eventuated). Yes, we see more evidence of his infamous attention to detail, but with the incredible access this filmmaker had to these files I had far higher expectations.
Average
The Informant (2009) - “The gluconate guy, he’s out of a job.” - I’m not sure that Steven Soderbergh was aiming for a laugh-out-loud film, but Matt Damon’s utterance earned a rare one from me (not a spoiler - it’s in the trailer). I liked that we have a more realist portrayal of corporate whistleblowing - it’s dull and the humour is in the mundane detail. Unfortunately there was not enough of the kitschy quirky detail to last the distance.
Average
The Young Victoria (2009) - I was never going to have a lot of enthusiam for a film that retold the early days of Queen Victoria’s rule - but I still found the events engrossing, even if the passion was lacking. It’s as beautifully made as you would expect - the costumes and sets are stunning. Interesting sidenote, this is the followup film from director Jean-Marc Vallée’s cult favourite C.R.A.Z.Y in 2005.
Average
The Lovely Bones (2009) - If this film, about the murder of a young girl, had been made with the sincerity and tone of last year’s acclaimed ‘Changeling’, instead of Peter Jackson’s attempt to target the Twilight crowd, then I might have seen the best film of the year. Instead the result is a collection of beautifully crafted dramatic scenes intercut with long and garish fantasy scenes that take the film nowhere and severley dimish the emotional impact. Obligatory snarky comments: Hey Peter, save some of those endings for the DVD. Oh, and Mark Wahlberg, your line reading and presence were just awful.
Average
Amreeka (2009) - An immigrant solo mother and her teenage son move from occupied Palestine to Illinois in order to create a better life. The cultural conflict that arises will surprise no-one and what results is essentially a ‘through-the-eyes’ film expressing writer/director Cherien Dabis’s impressions of US/Arab race relations post 9/11. There’s a crowd-pleasing resolution that belies the tension that film works hard to create, but it’s still a compelling drama with honest emotions.
Average
Roman de gare (2007) - A French drama and wannabe murder-mystery about a best-selling author and her ghost-writer. There is a lot of promise shown, but the tension that the film depends on is lost to a poor series of plot twists that are more smug than clever - and far from unpredictable.
Average January 10
Invictus (2009) - Morgan Freeman is well cast in this hagiographic look at Nelson Mandela who engages with the Springbok captain (Matt Damon) over the course of the 1995 Rugby World Cup to inspire unity in the country. Clint Eastwood does a sound job with direction but the one-dimensional script and complete lack of tension makes for dull viewing. The subject matter would however make for a great documentary where the issue of life after apartheid and “that game” could properly be explored using the perspective of the players and team management.
Average
The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009) - This must have sounded great on paper - a funny and intelligent satire that isn’t too far from the truth. George Clooney playing an agent who is part of an experimental U.S. military unit trained in the use of psychic powers. And parts of it worked - mostly just the parts with goats unfortunately.
Average December 09
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009) - Fans of the first will likely be happy to get more of the same, albiet with a slightly more contrived storyline this time around. All the original cast are back and this time there is the added bonus of Amy Adams who plays Amelia Earhart - and is generally the highlight. It's an easy to watch family drama the plays it close to the well worn formula.
Average
Planet Terror (2007) - Robert Rodriguez's zombie comedy/horror half of the Grindhouse double feature. Not as strong as the Tarantino directed contribution, but it works well as a tongue-in-cheek B-movie fantasy.
Average
Avatar 3D (2009) - James Cameron, known for big budget 'cautionary tale' films is at it again, this time highlighting environmentalism and indigenous rights, or possibly just the current state of studio effects and sound engineering. It's pure entertainment and delivers on its promise to take CGI to new levels. Alas, it very quickly becomes clear that the story, along with the characters' motivations and the indigenous non-agrarian society, is a complete nonsense and kills any attempt to enjoy the film beyond the surface visuals. I would like to say there are a lot of good ideas here, except none of them are original. The imagery, the struggle, the environmental and anti-war themes - all reduced to their simplest most cliche forms.
Average
The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans (2009) - It's difficult to comprehend the type of film Werner Herzog was trying to make here, and whether he thinks he succeeded. Nicolas Cage playing a rogue detective on the edge of sanity is both the best and worst thing going - nobody does crazy quite like Cage. It's dark and messy but entirely watchable. It's good to see Xzibit has progressed from his 'Yo dawg' phase.
Average
El rey de la montaña (King of the Hill) (2007) - A Spanish survivalist thriller about a man who is hunted in the mountains. It's a fun watch and the 'unseen killer' aspect works reasonably well, but the final reveal doesn't deliver on the promise - although in this case, maybe that's the point?
Average
The Invention of Lying (2009) - Ricky Gervais has done well here with what is esentially a one-joke film. Granted the story is entirely predictable - in fairness its ambitions lie more with risque comedy and quotable gags than creating a believable alternate reality. After a strong start things crawl in the last half as the characters are revealed to be generally unlikeable and the quirky inconsistencies lose their charm.
Average November 09
A Film with Me in It (2008) - An Ian Fitzgibbon directed dose of Irish humour as dark as Guinness. The character driven plot (featuring Dylan Moran and Mark Doherty) builds momentum nicely as freak accidents occur to a group of depressive housemates and things evolve in a meta-fiction direction.
Average October 09
Tropa de Elite (Elite Squad) (2007) - Set in Rio de Janeiro in 1997 just prior to the visit of the Pope, the ‘Elite Squad’ sets about taking down the heads of drug gangs in an attempt to clean up the streets. Based on true accounts it attempts to capture the futility of the honest, the endemic nature of corruption, and the dehumanising nature of violence. Sadly, it doesn’t come off with the necessary sincerity - you will gain far, far more insight from José Padilha’s earlier doco - Ônibus 174.
Average
Red (2008) - A reclusive man (played by Brian Cox) becomes the victim of a random act of violence, the killing of his beloved dog, courtesy of three teens. He sets about retribution in what can loosely be described as Marley and Me meets Gran Torino. An ok watch but nothing exceptional. Bonus: Robert Englund is still creepy, even without the makeup.
Average
Welcome to Macintosh (2008) - A behind-the-scenes look back at the history of Apple and the evolution of the company. I’m a borderline fanboy, and much of this was a fascinating insight, though not a particularly compelling watch. One just for the fans.
Average
Kingdom of Heaven (2005) - An historic epic adventure about a man thrust into the decades long war of the crusades in the 12th century. Ridley Scott needs to return to Character Development 101 and dispense with the actions scenes we’ve all seen done better elsewhere.
Average
Histoire de Marie et Julien (The Story of Marie and Julien) (2003) - Meandering suspense drama following the relationship between a clockmaker and his former girlfriend (played by Emmanuelle Béart). A tale of blackmail unravels slowly, casting an unsettling tone over the film. One for Béart fans.
Average September 09
La grande bouffe (1973) - Four men retreat to a mansion for a decadent weekend with the intention of ending their mid-life crisis by gorging themselves to death on food and sex. It must have made for a curious social commentary when it was released in 1972 - and despite being overlong it still holds up well several decades later.
Average
Comedian (2002) - Following the wrap up of the Seinfeld series, Jerry Seinfeld participated in this fly-on-the-wall doco which follows his attempt to ressurect his stand-up career with only new material. While it offers no insight into Jerry’s personal life, it does provide an interesting look at the backstage struggles of a professional comedian.
Average
Up 3D (2009) - The latest Disney/Pixar has proven to be another enormous success both critically and in the box office. Thematically, this is a great avenue for animation - a 78-year-old man setting out to fulfill a lifelong dream of exploring the South American wilds. Why am I grading it as average? I cannot flaw the visuals, they are perhaps my favourite of all the Pixar films and the 3D was tastefully employed, but ... the story is weak. In essence, once Carl Fredricksen makes it to South America the plot takes on a level of absurdity that betrays the mood built up by the first act. Carl’s journey is still endearing and enduring, but the worn off charm never returns and the character arcs of supporting characters never add up to much.
Average August 09
RocknRoller (2008) - If, like me, you enjoyed ‘Snatch’ and ‘Lock Stock...’ then Guy Ritchie’s latest gangster crime flick is largely redundant. The dark humour and visual style are present, but the dialogue no longer sounds fresh and it all amounts to an anticlimax.
Average
Up The Yangtze (2007) - There is probably a great documentary to be made about the largest hydroelectric project in history and it’s impact on the lives and legacy of the 2 million people relocated from their land. But this attempt does not deliver on the emotional weight it promises - it just meanders along without any clear direction and very little insight.
Average
District 9 (2009) - Finally a sci-fi B movie for the attention deficit generation. What we basically have here is an alien immigration story shot in an inconsistant faux-documentary style which rehashes the been-done-better theme of societal assimilation. It’s entertaining for a few minutes before it becomes tiresome as the now cliché almost mockumentary style humour subsides and the film evolves into a conventional action flick. There’s a tonal identity crisis going on with the narrative, which is at times tounge-in-cheek but has illusions of social commentary - though it’s thin on an real sense of morality. IMDb currently lists this as the third highest rated Sci-fi movie in history.
Average
Zwartboek (Black Book) (2006) - The most expensive Dutch movie to date. Paul Verhoeven takes a pretty good, though heavily fictionalised, story of the dutch resistence and goes too far in a commercial direction. The assumption is that people won’t watch a movie about the dutch resistence unless it has both sex and complex plot twists. There are no genuinely tense moments.
Average
Adventureland (2009) - Superbad director Greg Mottola has followed up one of the best comedies of 2007 with another charming coming-of-age teen dramedy - albiet with a little more actual romance this time. If I hadn’t enjoyed Superbad so much I would be worried that I was getting too old and cynical to enjoy films like this. It’s a self described ‘indie comedy’ with neat and tidy emotions and a calculated soundtrack - harmless fun.
Average
Sunshine Cleaning (2009) - Comparisons to Little Miss Sunshine are damaging to expectations. It doesn’t have the feel-good life affirming kick of LMS. There’s just not enough substance here. It’s fun to watch and the acting is strong but it keeps you at arms length.
Average
I Love You Man (2009) - I’ve noticed that films depicting males as emotionally inferior, and often inept, have beome increasing popular. It’s humorously taken to social-norm challenging lengths here - with Paul Rudd in lead and on a desperate search to find a new B.F.F. It’s entertaining enough, but never rises above that safe chick-flick level of humour. I think the New Your Post described it best: “Watching this movie is like listening to Michael Jackson tell you what real men are like”.
Average
Moon (2009) - It’s quite a tricky task to pull off a credible sci-fi homage film in the modern era - even with the best intentions. Duncan Jones has brought together so many good ideas and the production is certainly above average for the genre - largely helped by the minimal use of CG. But by the end you are right to feel cheated by the events that unfold. You will need to believe that the human story is more important than the feasibility of what actually occurs. Entertaining film, but Tarkovsky this ain’t.
Average
4 Little Girls (1997) - Spike Lee’s exploration of events and aftermath of the church bombing in Birmingham, 1963, which sparked nationwide outrage amongst a population that was generally unaware or indifferent to the degree of racism and bigotry in the south. Four little African-American girls lost their lives and their deaths were exploited by civil-rights leaders of the time to serve the greater cause of the movement. Spike Lee doesn’t find much balance and instead panders to the common view in the black community without really exploring the causes or putting the event in any kind of perspective.
Average
I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing (1987) - Voted by over 100 international critics as one of the ten best Canadian films of all time. 20 years on, I feel it suffers from ’80s synth soundtrack and while I won’t go so far as to call it pretentious, I will say I can appreciate why so many people love it. Wonderful story, but not my thing. For the record, by fav Canadian film would most likely be Exotica.
Average July 09
Brüno (2009) - Sacha Baron Cohen once again rolls out the stereotypes, cultural sight gags and prank interviews that have become his trademark. It’s often very funny, but my main two criticism of this film are the same for that of Cohen’s previous - Borat. Firstly, the comedy comes at the expense of others. I consider this to be the lowest form of entertainment. While there are some clever improvised lines his main tool is using the reactions (and beliefs) of others to entertain the audience. Secondly, the context is (deliberately) a mess to the point where the audience cannot tell what is staged and what is scripted. It’s a style that holds you at arms length and detracts heavily from the experience.
Average
World Trade Center (2006) - Oliver Stone intentions are certainly pure here - to portray unity and the human spirit via a simple linear plot about two Port Authority police officers become trapped in the rubble of the collapsed World Trade Center. While based on true events, it is both over sentimental and over simplistic - but we have come to expect from Stone. Nicely made, but just not in the same league addressing the subject matter in the way United 93 succeeded.
Average
The Hangover (2009) - The last few years have seen a rise in ‘bromace’ films - this one has some fresh faces and just hit the box office zenith. As I suspected, if you’ve seen the trailer then you have easily seen the best of this film about a bachelor party in Las Vegas that gets out of hand. The surprise for me was just how unfunny the connecting scenes are, and how little I cared about finding out about the series of events that led to their predicament.
Average
Juyuso seubgyuksageun (Attack the Gas Station!) (1999) - A Korean made black comedy about four bored youths who attack a gas station, and the antics that ensue. It works as a social commentary and its themes are universal. However, the comedic acting is not a strong point and the slaptick violence quicky wears thin during its overlong runtime.
Average
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) - I won’t go as far as many critics and suggest that Michael Bay’s big budget sequel to the well received Transformers is incomprehensible. But I will posit that this is just a fruitless search for something meaningful. The entertainment comes from the evolution of the characters, though much of the great dialogue from the first episode is missing here. There are plenty of epic battles and prolonged actions scenes of Megan Fox in slow motion but this time around they seem dull. It’s not fun, or funny, or funtastic.
Average
Anything Else (2003) - Not all Woody Allen films are a hit or miss experience. Some, like this modern romcom starring Jason Biggs and Christina Ricci, are just a watchable tale with enough occasional writer/director trademarks to make it amusing and entertaining. All of Woody’s usual themes of philosophy, sexuality and infidelity are here - but at times it just feels like he was treading water with this effort.
Average June 09
Mamma Mia! (2008) - It seems the real success here is creating an ABBA musical movie that isn’t terrible. Somehow all the silliness and poor choreography works as entertainment. That doesn’t change the fact that it’s a light and flimsy story with ABBA songs sometimes very awkwardly inserted.
Average
Palookaville (1995) - Two friends bungle a jewelry store heist but persevere with a plan to rob an armored truck. There are lots of quirky comedic moments and Vincent Gallo does well in his role as one of the not-too-smart crims.
Average
Dean Spanly (2008) - Kiwi director Toa Fraser follows up No. 2 with a pretty good Edwardian tale starring Peter O’Toole, Sam Neill and Bryan Brown. It’s an eccentric tale that is both original and engaging, but it does require a great deal of patience and imagination.
Average
This Film Is Not Yet Rated (2006) - A documentary attacking the validity of the American movie ratings board (MPAA). I learnt a lot and was left in no doubt the current system is a sham, but the director’s tone/intent came off more as a personal vendetta rather than a meaningful critique of the ratings system.
Average May 09
Star Trek (2009) - I have seen and enjoyed most of the Star Trek films and even bought into the hype that came with this J.J. Abrams prequel. This is a success story on how a franchise can be reborn by cleverly taking the elements and attributes people know and giving them a modern treatment. The unfortunate result in this instance is a mindless exercise in filmmaking with a generic plot designed to appeal to teenage fanboys.
Average
Cloverfield (2008) - In a film about monsters/aliens attacking New York, it’s a little ironic that it is the ‘self-absorbed youth’ sub plot that comes off as the most contrived aspect of this J.J. Abrams produced big budget experiment. Etirely watchable but equally predictable and shallow.
Average
Haute tension (High Tension) (2003) - French psychological thriller about two college friends how go and stay in a family country home and get invaded by a mysterious killer. While far from perfect, it is more intelligent than the typical Hollywood blood and gore offerings and fans of the genre will not be disappointed.
Average
El crimen del padre Amaro (The Crime Of Father Amaro) (2002) - At the time of release, this was the highest grossing film in Mexican film history - perhaps more due to the popularity of the original Portuguese novel than the quality of this adaptation. The story centres on a newly-ordained priest (played by Gael García Bernal) in a small Mexican town who is lead into temptation.
Average
American Gangster (2007) - Is Denzel Washington the most boring actor to have won an Oscar? Here is one of the great and fascinating gangster stories of American history portrayed in a way that is unconvincing and frequently dull. With high production values and Ridley Scott at the helm it never achieves the level of passion or intensity required.
Average April 09
The Hills Have Eyes (1977) - A low-budget ‘inbred hicks turn cannibles’ tale - a genre that became quite fashionable at the time. This is probably Wes Craven’s best film as it comments on the collapse of civilised values in the quest for self preservation.
Average
Elegy (2008) - An aging cultural critic (Ben Kingsley) spends his time hitting on former students, but things change when he meets Consuela (Penélope Cruz) and possesiveness takes over. It’s a slow melancholic crawl from start to finish.
Average
Monsters vs Aliens (3D IMAX) (2009) - The latest offering from Dreamworks studio and they are running pretty hot after the success of last year's Kung Fu Panda. This time there are the usual array of interesting characters, but once again, the story isn't Pixar grade. There are a lot of sight gags mixed with classic Sci-Fi references, and Reece's Susan/Ginormica character is adorable. As a total experience (in 3D) I would recommend it for animated fans - but as an entry in the annals of film history it's nothing special.
Average
Rescue Dawn (2006) - Epic disappointment from Werner Herzog considering how brilliant the documentary was he made about these events (Little Dieter Needs to Fly). There are some great performances (though Bale was not the highlight) but it just looks like Herzog made too many compromises and the screenplay is lacking in intensity. Go see the 1997 doco instead.
Average March 09
Young At Heart (2007) - Documentary that follows a New England senior citizens' chorus as they learn new songs for a tour. While the old folks are the central feature and provide from some great entertainment, the filmmaking qualities are not outstanding and it doesn't perform to its full potential. As a viewer, you sometimes feel that situations are exploited by director Stephen Walker, despite genuine intentions.
Average
Millions (2004) - I'm really not sure what type of film Danny Boyle was trying to make here. While there is a well written plot line, the delivery is inconsistent and loose. Maybe the problem is that it goes over the top to deliver a feel-good mood. Or more likely, I don't believe in the magic that he was selling.
Average
Ghost (1990) - It did in fact take nearly 20 years for me to end up watching this, but I did pledge to watch it before Patrick Swayze well ... became a ghost himself. So here I am writing about this cringe inducing film which contains all the evidence you need that Swayze is the only actor more wooden that Keanu Reeves. It's also one of the least romantic films I've ever seen.
Average
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) - This was really the only Potter film I was interesting in seeing - primarily to see what Alfonso Cuarón would do with the source material. Visually this is superior (it actually has something called atmosphere) to the previous episodes and there is not as much superfluous distractions. Ultimately though this is not a fantasy world I'm interested in - but I'm sure the kids loved it.
Average
Role Models (2008) - If you are looking for a film along the lines of 'Superbad' or 'Knocked Up' then I suggest you move along. Paul Rudd does an OK job along with Seann William Scott, but this is not the sharpest script and the result is largely forgettable.
Average
Saved! (2004) - A few too many stereotypical jabs and lame obvious jokes ruin what could have been a very well executed satire about a girl from a strict evangelical Christian high school who becomes pregnant. It's good natured stuff but it left me wondering why I bothered? Oh that's right, Mandy Moore.
Average
In the Valley of Elah (2007) - Is there a writer working today more erratic in nature than Paul Haggis? I'm not quite ready to forgive him for some horrific crimes against cinema even though this crime drama about a retired military investigator looking for answers behind his son's disappearance is pretty good. Actually, some of it is beautifully shot but too often Haggis takes things too far.
Average
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) - The visual effects have been greatly improved and at least in this installment there is some semblance of a story arc. I personally find it tedious, overlong and intellectually numbing.
Average
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) - The highest grossing Christmas film worldwide - ever. It's not a turkey, but it is overstuffed and requires a little more patience than I was willing to give it. Ironic that Howard would go on to direct Frost/Nixon - Jim Carry is clearly channeling the the gruff nature of Nixon here.
Average
George Carlin... It's Bad for Ya! (2008) - Notable for robbing 'Flight of The Conchords' of an Emmy. I've had a certain level of appreciation for Calin's brand of politically incorrect humour over the years but at 70 this is perhaps his most cyncial and dark performance (even speaking in detail of his death which would come sooner than even he would have anticipated). So often his comedy and philosophy is dead on - but his style is to come off sounding cranky that's not the way to win hearts and minds.
Average
Jurassic Park III (2001) - Easily the most entertaining of the series - particularly in regard to character interest. Sure there are plenty of 'so-bad-they're-good' moments, but the short runtime means the pacing is taut and there is an element of suspense that was missing from its predecessors.
Average
Jurassic Park (1993) - It's hard to believe I didn't get around to seeing this for 15 years. Very little of what I imagine made this great in 1993 holds up today. The visual effects are uneven due to the mix of live action animatronics with full motion digital dinosaurs. Without the wow factor of the FX the attention is drawn to the plot which is bafflingly weak and frequently non-existent. It feels like it had an hour of character development cut out.
Average February 09
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) - Even though this is my least favourite genre, I was still struck by the episodic and simplistic nature of this acclaimed series. Most surprisingly was the poorly rendered effects and action sequences. Performances are generally weak from all the child actors and even seasoned professionals are showing only surface level emotion.
Average
Doubt (2008) - My biggest fear about this slow moving 'dodgy priest' story was confirmed and there is indeed nothing you can't discover about this film that isn't revealed in the trailer. Meryl Streep's performance is uneven and not her best work. Amy Adams on the other hand is deserving of her Oscar nomination here. Great drama and mystery, but just not rewarding viewing.
Average
Revolutionary Road (2008) - A beautifully crafted film (as you would expect from Sam Mendes) about a suburban couple in the mid-50s struggling to find happiness in their marriage and meaning in their lives. The Thomas Newman score really drags the pacing, and I'm a little tired of acting that involves simply yelling and throwing furniture. However, Michael Shannon's scene-stealing performance is a real redeemer.
Average
Redbelt (2008) - Watching a David Mamet film is always an unnerving sensation. You never quite know where the contrived plot is heading, but hang in there anyway for the unravelling finale. This time the plot is centred on a Jiu-Jitsu instructor who refuses to fight despite facing financial troubles. It's strictly for the Mamet fans - most of the regular gang are back.
Average
Flushed Away (2006) - It's tough to be critical of an animated tale simply because it fails to fully satisfy viewers of all ages - but that is the precedent we have come to expect. Ultimately, this is about rats getting flushed down a sewer and it needs more than singing slugs to be memorable.
Average
Bulworth (1998) - Political satire is hard to get right on screen and Warren Beatty achieves only partial success playing a disillusioned liberal politician who puts a contract out on himself. Despite garnering a best screen play Oscar nomination, the story seems unsure of the message it's trying to make.
Average
Miami Blues (1990) - A last gasp 80s romantic crime drama (and not the only 'hooker with a heart of gold' tale from 1990). Alec Baldwin plays a one man crime wave who sends the film into a bizarre black comedy spiral.

American Teen (2008) - This might be the most realistic portrayal of contemporary High School life as a teenager in America (that wasn't filmed by Gus Van Sant). Billed as a documentary, but too contrived for this to be given credence - it follows the lives of a four individuals as they battle with the challenges of daily life.
Average
Inland Empire (2006) - David Lynch once again employs his non-linear storytelling and narrative style to go even deeper than (the far superior) Mulholland Dr. There are a lot of intense Lynchian moments to enjoy but this one is strictly for the hard core fans. If you do manage to sit through the three hour runtime you will at least be rewarded with one of the more interesting credit sequences I've seen in a while.
Average
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) - Setting aside how beautifully crafted this film is, I just didn't care for the characters or their motivations. The idea of exploring the choices we make in life was the only redeeming element in the script for me.
Average
Religulous (2008) - As a regular viewer of Bill Maher's 'Real Time' I had some quite high expectations of the subject matter being explored and the style of delivery. But despite the occasional well provoked moments of footage, this doco has no teeth and more of a whimper than a bark.
Average December 08
Quantum of Solace (2008) - We had every reason to go into this with Casino Royale level expectations. However, the clever lines and gadgets are no more - and have been replaced by far too many convoluted action sequences. The franchise certainly has its share of weak story-lines - but this whole Bolivian water supply thing is just juvenile.
Average
Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008) - Unmemorable and unfunny. Conceptually this could have been the comedy of the year - the execution was far from it.
Average November 08
Wild Things (2001) - The only thing worse than the paper thin characters was the unbelievably appalling lighting.
Average
Breakfast on Pluto (2005) - Neil Jordan serves up Cillian Murphy as a character called 'Kitten' in a coming of age trans-gender tale. It sounds like a great premise right? Wrong.
Average
The Mist (2007) - This is not a bad film - unless your name is Frank Darabont and you have an audience that knows what you are capable of. Drawing once again from a Stephen King piece, this is a dark and tense thriller but it never attains its potential.
Average
Appurushîdo (Appleseed) (2004) - You shouldn't be coming to me for an opinion on anime. This was the first feature length anime film I have seen in the 3D format - the story was engaging enough, but it was more of a visual curiosity than anything else.
Average October 08
Confidences trop intimes (Intimate Stangers) (2004) - Nice plot concept - a women with marriage problems mistakes a financial adviser for a psychiatrist and over time shares the secrets of her life. The problem is it doesn't go anywhere - it's just two lonely people who concede they live boring lives.
Average
The Brave One (2007) - Jodie Foster is well cast in this good but not great revenge thriller from director Neil Jordan. The vigilante theme (and presence of Foster) had me feeling this is a deliberate attempt to evoke the aura of Taxi Driver.
Average
The Visitor (2007) - The sole reason for seeing this for me was because this was writer/director Thomas McCarthy's follow up to The Station Agent. The story makes a strong social statement about humanity at a time when immigration and race issues are ever present. It's a well made film, but it did not connect with me - perhaps I'm just too cynical of leftist Hollywood propaganda.
Average
The Forbidden Kingdom (2008) - It's generally unfair of me to criticize films in the martial arts genre as I basically don't know how to take them. Everything seems preposterous to me. But I do know sub par acting when I see it. And a story that is just set pieces linked by a simplistic plot.
Average
The X Files: I Want to Believe (2008) - I wanted to believe this would be great. It was nice to revisit Scully and Mulder one more time, but after all these years this latest big screen offering seems to be let down primarily by a script that doesn't recall any of the original magic.
Average September 08
Outsourced (2006) - Light but sweet comedy about an American novelty products salesman who heads to India to train his replacement. It's a cute concept but crudely stereotypical and predictable.
Average
Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008) - Pretty much exactly what you would expect if you saw these guys go to White Castle four years ago. The comedy is somewhat above average for the genre - it's a fun watch.
Average
Direktøren for det hele (The Boss of It All) (2006) - Lars von Trier takes on a rare comedy endeavour about an office manager who hires an actor to close the sale of the business. Comparisons with The Office are unavoidable, although the Danish tone is somewhat darker.
Average
Sleuth (2007) - Given the original is one of my all time favourite British films, I was always going to be disappointed by this Kenneth Branagh directed remake. The pacing is not great and the whole tone of the film comes off as too pretentious.
Average
The Grand (2007) - A great cast assemble in this improvisational comedy about poker players competing in a tournament. But none of the actors are at the top of their game and oddly enough the only funny thing here is Werner Herzog.
Average August 08
Recount (2008) - An all star cast of limp wristed liberals lined up to have an over dramatic whinge about how Al Gore lost the 2000 election. The made for TV quality makes this seem more like a self parody at times (an over serious Spacey doesn't help), but the true life story is compelling watching as this was a fascinating historic event.
Average
Manufacturing Dissent (2007) - Documentarian Debbie Melnyk attempts to distinguish the fact from fiction in the life of Michael Moore. The main focus is on Roger and Me and the early years in Moore's career. There is nothing particularly new here as most of the criticisms are already well known, but the films does succeed in highlighting the many ways in which Moore uses manipulation both in his films and his life in general.
Average
King Corn (2007) - Documentary about two friends who grow an acre of corn in Iowa to highlight the rise in everyday usage of corn in the United States. It wasn't a spectacular story, but gets points for not pushing an agenda - the balanced approach was refreshing.
Average
The Onion Movie (2008) - Fans of The Onion satire will find something to like here - but the truly great moments are few and far between. Originally filmed in 2003 and only recently released to DVD after being shelved due to poor test screening.
Average
Hard Candy (2005) - A revenge thriller that is more of a character study than the clever psychological cat and mouse tale it wants to be. The performances are ok, but it was all too scripted for my liking.
Average July 08
Charlie Bartlett (2007) - The comparisons with Wes Anderson's brilliant 'Rushmore' are inevitable (and even a little Harold and Maude), but this is a pale imitation. It's an ambitious effort and there is a lot to like, but it fades toward the end and just becomes another offbeat high school drama.
Average
Severance (2006) - A team building weekend turns into a Eastern European slasher fest. Not a genre I love, and a bit of a wildcard in my viewing queue, but this one was watchable.
Average
The Chumscrubber (2005) - Sometimes I persevere through films that a clearly not going to offer a payoff. This dark satire on suburban life is a good example of this. Though interesting in concept, it fails to show sincerity and ends up exemplifying a Hollywood story that tries too hard to be indie.
Average
Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008) - Fun but forgettable popcorn film - I guess I was expecting more true to life characters after all those great Apatow films recently. Mila Kunis was the only real highlight.
Average
Hancock (2008) - Conceptually very good, but poor execution and a wayward storyline drag this modern superhero tale way down.
Average
Stripes (1981) - Bill Murray and Harold Ramis play a couple of life's drop outs who enter the army in this Ivan Reitman directed cult comedy from the early eighties. It's not particularly funny anymore, or cleverly written, but does showcase some great actors early in their careers.
Average
Sex and the City (2008) - Putting aside the shallow and vulgar nature of characters, the film itself is disjointed and plotless. I would like to give it the benefit of the doubt and assume it is a deliberate portrayal of the emptiness of materialism - but I don't know that this occurred to the writers.
Average
The Accidental Tourist (1988) - The Lawrence Kasdan stylings are very much of the eighties - twenty years on this approach comes of as being both artificial and melodramatic.
Average June 08
A Passage to India (1984) - The great David Lean's last film deals with colonization in India in the early 1920s. It falls short when attempting to evoke the mood and tension that are required - and you really feel every minute of the 163min runtime.
Average May 08
Exils (2004) - A road movie from French writer/director Tony Gatlif captuiring a couple returning to their parents birthplace in Algeria. Nicely shot, but not enough to keep me fully engaged.
Average
Mon meilleur ami (My Best Friend) (2006) - The reassuring French formula for comic drama is once again on display with Daniel Auteuil as lead. This effort is light but plenty entertaining.
Average
The Hottie and the Nottie (2008) - I had to see this for myself, and as suspected this is the film that exposes the IMDb rating system to be a farce. Within the genres she operates, Paris Hilton is actually an above average actor. This is not as bad as the last couple of terrible comedies I have seen such as Shrek 3 or Blades of Glory.
Average April 08
Sicko (2007) - Michael Moore's attempt to indict the American healthcare system using his standard bag of tricks by revealing only facts that support his stance. There is an embarrassing lack of balance, many awkward scenes of manipulation, and no real solution offered.
Average
Helvetica (2007) - This was a bit of a let down for me. I love typography, but Helvetica loses its direction very quickly and becomes an exercise in self indulgence by not bridging the gap to an audience outside of the design industry.
Average
Born Into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids (2004) - The story of Zana Briski's attempt to both document and help some of the children in Calcutta's red light district. I feel bad saying this because everyone was better off for her efforts, but I frequently had the uncomfortable feeling that she was taking advantage of these children.
Average
The U.S. vs. John Lennon (2006) - A look at the post-Beatles Lennon as he becomes a New York citizen and antiwar protester. Where this documentary fails is in the selective (read: positive bias) nature of the facts about his life that are revealed. The portrait of the man is less interesting that he backdrop of the vietnam war, but at least the music is first class.
Average
Definitely, Maybe (2008) - A fluffy romantic comedy that is entirely watchable because it avoids many of the formulaic traps of the genre. However, the ending is surprising in that you expect a surprise, but the obvious still happens. Oh, and my general dislike of Rachel Weisz continues through this film.
Average
Passport to Pimlico (1949) - An English classic political satire about a Cockney London neighborhood. I don't find these Ealing Studios comedies to be a endearing as the English clearly did at the time, but they do capture an important period in history and worthwhile for that alone.
Average
Margot at the Wedding (2007) - Noah Baumbach writes and directs another uncomfortable family drama. This time, despite some great scenes, things come off looking like a pretentious film for depressives.
Average
Death at a Funeral (2007) - Not a great year for British ensemble comedies. Here is another example of an unfunny black comedy that falls flat and is nothing more than a couple of amusing situation gags.
Average
Cassandra's Dream (2007) - As a Woody Allen fan I really wanted to love this film - but the two leads (Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor) are among my least favourite actors, and in this film they are both terrible. The Philip Glass score was a nice touch, but in all other aspects this is a let down after the great Match Point.
Average
Run Fatboy Run (2007) - Given the (mostly British) talent involved, this is ultimately a wasted effort. The comedy/drama ratio never feels balanced and too often it is reduced to obvious gags and plot cliches.
Average
The Kite Runner (2007) - How can a film so beautifully made carry no emotional weight. Such potential, and yet ends up a bland and manipulative display of Liberal guilt. You know a film has gone too far when you hear the violins playing, rather than feel them.
Average
The Good Night (2007) - Very weak attempt to make something as evocative as Vanilla Sky. This is another waste of talent, and would have been a lot more compelling if Penélope Cruz had just sat in a chair reading the script.
Average
Julia (1977) - Jane Fonda plays an American women trying to help her childhood friend in Nazi Germany. I could not connect with the plight of Fonda's chararcter - seemed a little melodramatic given all the other things going on during the war. Took out the BAFTA in 1979.
Average March 08
Nicotina (2003) - A bit of a lightweight Mexican attempt at a gangster crime flick - clearly influenced by Guy Ritchie and Tarantino. Enjoyable watch for the most part, but tries a little too hard and comes off contrived.
Average
The Contender (2000) - Oscar nominations for acting in this film say more about the lack of competition in 2000. This is just a political thriller that starts with promise but fails to deliver, and ends up a mess of moral hypocrisy.
Average February 08
Twin Town (1997) - Worth a look as an example of a Welsh black comedy. However, ultimately not a great film and sorely lacking in style and originality.
Average
Trust (1990) - I struggled to see how Hal Hartley, in what is likely his best known film, has achieved cult status. This was kinda boring and not the sort of film I could recommend to anyone I know.
Average
A Mighty Heart (2007) - This is the first film from Michael Winterbottom that I haven't enjoyed. I didn't feel connected with the characters or their plight. Strange, because I clearly remember the moment I heard that Daniel Pearl had been murdered and the video affected me greatly.
Average
Live Free or Die Hard (2007) - I was only interested in the FX here, but was curious to see if any of the budget was spent on a worthwhile script. It wasn't. Bruce Willis is the only redeeming factor here. The rest is just tired geek porn cliches.
Average
Les Rivières Pourpres (Crimson Rivers) (2000) - I was drawn into this French conspiracy thriller by the cast of Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel. It's seems to be more complicated than it needs, but an entertaining watch.
Average
The Simpsons Movie (2007) - Enjoyable feature length comedy, but I was disappointed to find that the change in format to the big screen doesn't add anything new. There are better written episodes in some of the earlier seasons.
Average January 08
The Thing (1982) - This classic horror from John Carpenter is chiefly an exhibition of special effects and the cementing of stereotypes that the genre is so well know for. There are some tight suspenseful moments though, and the premise is strong.
Average
A Good Year (2006) - With Ridley Scott directing and Russell Crowe in lead I already knew this would be a film I wouldn't enjoy. It's an above average formulaic romantic comedy - just not for me.
Average
Bosque de sombras (The Backwoods) (2005) - Borrowing so heavily from Straw Dogs and Deliverence that there is nothing original to appreciate in this Gary Oldman lead film, set in the backwoods of rural Spain.
Average
Be Cool (2005) - Frivolous, but entertaining sequel to Get Shorty. It's a wasted effort from such a stellar cast.
Average
Smokin' Aces (2006) - Watchable, yes, but basically a forgettable action flick with stylized violence and a nice ensemble cast.
Average December 07
Hors de prix (Priceless) (2006) - Plenty of French, but not enough farce in this quirky romantic comedy. A good move for Audrey Tautou, who needed this to rebound from the appalling Da Vinci Code.
Average
Oliver Twist (2005) - Here is the proof that Sir David Lean was an absolute genius - because 50 years ago he made a far superior version in every aspect. That's not to say Polanski failed here - he just didn't make a memorable Dickens classic.
Average
A Scanner Darkly (2006) - Richard Linklater doing Philip K Dick. It's not a genre I get excited about, but an interesting watch - I'm sure fans of both Linklater and Dick will love it.
Average
Secondhand Lions (2003) - A coming-of-age story that can't decide whether it wants to be something more than a simple family adventure. Simply doesn't captivate.
Average
The Illusionist (2006) - I had high hopes for this Edward Norton headed mystery thriller. Could have been something special were it not for a "twist" so absurdly obvious it makes the last two-thirds drag.
Average
Play Misty For Me (1971) - Clint Eastwood's directorial debut is an interesting psycho thriller which could be considered a classic of the genre, but has also not aged too well.
Average November 07
Factotum (2005) - Matt Dillon is slightly miscast in the lead role of this Charles Bukowski based film about a wandering writer scraping by in life. There's a lot to like, but the sum total isn't something I would recommend.
Average
Den (2001) - Oh my, this is the lowest budget film I have seen in a looong time. Think Saw on a shoestring. Oddly watchable despite some very uneven performances.
Average
No. 2 (2006) - It's always a pleasant surprise to catch a film set in your home city that doesn't make you cringe. Toa Fraser's No. 2 is a great cultural vignette with some nice performances, but is unfortunately lacking a compelling storyline to take it to the next level.
Average
Cabaret (1971) - I can see what the movie is trying to say, but the method of delivery, not to mention how annoying Liza Minnelli is, really does not suit my sensibilities.
Average October 07
Colour Me Kubrick (2005) - The true..ish tale of Alan Conway, the conman who impersonated Stanley Kubrick for a period during the nineties. It's a mostly enjoyable watch but nothing exceptional.
Average
Idiocracy (2006) - A light comedy from Office Space director Mike Judge that was never going to be a masterpiece but manages to entertain thanks to its quirky future based concept.
Average
The Devil Wears Prada (2006) - A real mixed bag of good/bad moments that never amounts to much. Loved the industry satire but the flimsy relationship stories were unbearable.
Average
Superman Returns (2006) - Bryan Singer strikes out in this fairly generic action flick. It's not a genre I particularly enjoy - perhaps just one for the fans.
Average
Dreamgirls (2006) - I'm still no closer to understanding the American fascination with musicals. However, this one is beautifully made - with great songs and atmosphere but a little lack of soul in the story had me checking my watch all too often.
Average
Clerks II (2006) - Kevin Smith has been living off the success of his first (pretty good) Clerks movie for far too long with only a string of average films that never reach his potential. But he has returned to some level of form with this remake. It's not outstanding but still a fun watch.
Average September 07
Borat (2006) - I could write all day about how deeply unfunny this film is. If it were an attack on Political Correctness, or a satire on the American life, I would have been laughing along. The idea is brilliant, but the execution just seems to highlight Sacha Baron Cohen's misanthropic and disrespectful outlook on humanity.
Average
Hollywoodland (2006) - A good but not great look at the mystery surrounding the death of George Reeves, TV's Superman.
Average
Art School Confidential (2006) - Terry Zwigoff's follow up to 'Bad Santa' is unfortunately not up to his 'Ghost World' game - I really wish it was because the material had all the potential. Still a great watch despite its flaws.
Average
The Good German (2006) - Soderbergh falls short in this attempt to pay tribute to the post war films of the 40's and 50's. Complete with vintage B-movie processing I can't help but feel it could have been so much more with a better composed ending and a cast rethink.
Average
The Bandwagon (1953) - The classic musical comedy with Fred Astaire in the lead. I haven't yet built up an appreciation for the genre but it was a worthwhile watch to see an icon of bygone cinema.
Average
Everything is Illuminated (2005) - I'm still trying to figure out why I wasn't impressed by what appears to be a great story. I'm going to blame Elijah Wood - he's just annoying - and the emotional weight of the film is never carried by the performance.
Average
Bourne Ultimatum (2007) - Currently sitting at an undeserved #76 on the IMDB Top 250, this intellectually uninvolved followup may be a fast paced ride, but it's on a road to dullsville.
Average August 07
American Dreamz (2006) - Somehow I got it in my head that this might be a film worth watching. Fails to deliver the message it really wanted to - a situation exacerbated by a horribly miscast line up.
Average
Kung Pow! Enter the Fist (2002) - Bizarre Steve Oedekerk acted/directed spoof the martial arts genre. Might be worth a look for something completely different, but very juvenile, and more often that not, unfunny.
Average
The Aristocrats (2005) - More of a curiosity than anything else. One hundred "superstar" comedians reflect on the same joke made famous from Vaudeville days.
Average
For Your Consideration (2006) - The usual cast are all back in this latest offering from Christopher Guest. Unfortunately it never matches the wit found in his earlier mockumentary films.
Average
Just Like Heaven (2005) - Kind of lame romantic comedy, but thanks to Reese Witherspoon it's cute in places and therefore not a complete waste of time.
Average
John Tucker Must Die (2006) - In my defense, I saw this on a bus in Peru and had no choice about it. Everything is obvious and nothing is funny - but it made the ride fun.
Average
Wild Hogs (2007) - It's the kind of film I would only watch if I was stuck on a plane with nothing else to do. Which is what happened, and I was entertained but not enthralled by this star studded nostalgia pic about suburban biker wannabes.
Average
Derailed (2005) - An all too predictable, ill-cast and poorly scripted thriller with Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston playing a couple who have an affair and the blackmail that results.
Average July 07
House of Wax (2005) - A remake in name only of the Vincent Price original. It's everything you would expect from a teen horror featuring Paris Hilton and probably shouldn't be too harshly regarded given it plays by all the rules of the horror genre.
Average
Cheaper By The Dozen (2003) - Mildly amusing Steve Martin family comedy. Ultimately a wasted effort given the potential of the premise.
Average
Cypher (2002) - Sci-fi spy thriller from 'Cube' director Vincenzo Natali. Some interesting action and plot development but sadly doesn't hold enough interest throughout.
Average
Ocean's Thirteen (2007) - Steven Soderbergh returns to direct the third installment of the series. It's a fun watch but nothing new is on show and the 'smart and cool' factor is missing in action.
Average
Night at the Museum (2006) - Fun and imaginative family adventure flick with Ben Stiller in lead. Multi-leveled comedy but aimed at the kids.
Average
Paris, je t'aime (2006) - A total of 18 short films from different leading directors about love in Paris. It's a difficult and disjointed watch and I lost interest in places. Alexander Payne’s segment blew the rest away.
Average
Hide and Seek (2005) - Deniro and Dakota Fanning thriller. You need to put up with a lot before it gets interesting and even then fizzles out into nothing original.
Average January 07
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) - I'm starting to lose paitence with Tim Burton. Despite a few good moments this is a remake with very little new to offer.
Average
Marie Antoinette (2006) - A modern interpretation of the life of Marie Antoinette. I really wanted to like it, but the story, or lack of one, was just not portrayed in a compelling manner and there is nothing rewarding to be found when the final credits roll.
Average
Kinsey (2004) - Biopic about Alfred Kinsey, a pioneer in the area of human sexuality research. I was interested in learning about Kinsey, but got bored by the smug tone of the film.
Average December 06
Out of the Blue (2006) - A true account of the Aramoana Massacre by David Gray in 1990. While not bad for a NZ film, Out of the Blue is oddly lacking in emotional depth and impact, with an awkward script that doesn't deliver the punch you expect.
Average
Support Your Local Sheriff! (1969) - A mostly unfunny comic western sitcom of a film. I don't know how this made it into the IMDB Top 50 Westerns - just stick with Blazing Saddles.
Average
National Treasure (2004) - I would have loved this all-action adventure film 20 odd years ago. Is it wrong to mark it down because I wasn't entertained as an adult? At least it was better than the similarly themed Da Vinci Code.
Average
Sanma no aji (Autumn Afternoon) (1962) - Another slow moving drama from one of Japan's great directors, Yasujiro Ozu (Tokyo Story). This time however, I couldn't generate enough excitement for the subject matter.
Average November 06
Jindabyne (2006) - With shades of Ray Lawrence's previous film, Lantana, and reminiscent of another Aussie great, Picnic at Hanging Rock, I had high hopes at the outset. But this story, set in the Australian town of Jindabyne, is a whole lot of ideas that never really come together in a meaningful way.
Average
Wedding Crashers (2005) - No synopsis necessary in this highly predictable Owen Wilson & Vince Vaughn outing. Entertaining enough, but undeserving of the high regard it has established.
Average
Daai si gin (Breaking News) (2004) - Hong Kong film about a TV news crew doing a live broadcast of police trying to bust a gang of thieves. As far as action films go, it was enjoyable and thoroughly watchable - but by the end it really wasn't interesting enough.
Average
The Constant Gardener (2005) - A well constructed film, but a cliche ridden plot that appeals to people who want to believe that evil is as easy to identify in life as in comic books. Rachel Weisz' character irked me to despair.
Average
The Bourne Supremecy (2004) - This time around in the Bourne series the incessant short-cut editing is a distraction leaving the film muddled in places. It's entertaining, but not doesn't reach the same level as the first.
Average October 06
Signs (2002) - M. Night Shyamalan's alien invasion flick with Mel Gibson and Johnny Cash. I couldn't avoid it as it found its way into the all time top 100 grossing films. Not as bad as I first imagined it might be - could have redeemed itself if not for a hokey ending.
Average
Tau man ji D (Initial D) (2005) - Hong Kong adaption of a well known Manga series. Plays out like a music video where the subject is downhill drift racing. It's light and entertaining with some slick visual editing.
Average
The World's Fastest Indian (2005) - Hopkins' performance was first class as always, but I can't help but feel let down by a fanciful script that removes everything genuine about Burt Munro and leaves us with a series of parodies that add up to very little.
Average
Madagascar (2005) - The latest Dreamworks Animation film is a good indication of how far behind Pixar this studio is. While certainly targetted more towards kids, some of the humour works on many levels, but generally underwhelming as a whole.
Average
One Night at McCool's (2001) - A light and entertaining screwball crime-thriller with some funny moments but ultimately let down by a weak script.
Average
Me and You and Everyone We Know (2005) - A well-meaning independent film about people trying to connect with each other. I had heard good things about it, but I just couldn't enjoy it - the main characters were too annoying.
Average September 06
Welcome to Collinwood (2002) - A fun quirky Steven Soderbergh produced crime comedy with many moments to savour but not enought to recommend.
Average
Happy Endings (2005) - Ensemble casted working that popular "multiple intertwining storylines" genre. None of which however are interesting, and none of the characters are particularly likeable. Maggie Gyllenhaal is the only good thing here.
Average
The Way of the Gun (2000) - Two criminal drifters attempt to kidnap a surrogate mother but things don't go as planned. Despite a solid cast, the overall effect is a crime thriller that is not much more than a made for TV drama.
Average August 06
The Weather Man (2005) - Nicolas Cage plays a troubled weather man trying to make sense of the life he is leading and the problems with his family life. Odd tonal shifts make it difficult to discern the real meaning - that life is unpredictable like the weather.
Average
In Good Company (2004) - Formulaic but watchable chick flick with Topher Grace and Scarlett Johansson as love interests. Great indie soundtrack is just about the best thing going here.
Average
Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) - It's been a long time since I caught the early Star Trek films so i have decided to revisit them all chronologically. This first entry is a great taster to some of the better ones that followed. Not great, but good for it's time.

Dare mo shiranai (Nobody Knows) (2004) - Japanese film about four children who are abandoned by their mother and forced to look after themselves. A great film, but not enough to recommend.
Average February 06
Hitch (2005) - A major box office success but as far as romantic comedies go, this one has a complete lack of genuine emotional depth.
Average
Try Seventeen (2002) - Ultimately uninteresting and juvenille/pretentious story. However, as it appears to be targetted at the mid-late teen chick-flick market, it probably succeeds.
Average January 06
Finding Neverland (2004) - I'll state upfront that I'm not a fan of Kate Winslet. But while I am a fan of Depp, I didn't like his character portrayal here, or the story in general. It just wasn't for me - but I do appreciate how other may find it charming.
Average
Stuck On You (2003) - I always find there is enough to be found in a Farrelly brothers film to at least raise a wry smile. This one is not their best, but takes some of their most absurd material to the absolute limit.
Average
Die Another Day (2002) - By-the-numbers Bond flick. Nothing outstanding but that doesn't stop it from being watchable and even entertaining in places.
Average
Whiskey Galore (1949) - A classic of British cinema. I get that it is supposed to be a comedy, it just irked me that the townspeople were so willing to break the law and steal what wasn't theirs.
Average December 05
Robots (2005) - Unlike the Pixar brand of animated comedy, Robots lacks the wider appeal - and oddly, this may even be too scary for some kids. The superb detail and sound kept my interest.
Average
The Ladies Man (1961) - The first Jerry Lewis film I have seen. Fairly inconsistent, but plenty of craziness and sight gags that are still funny today.
Average
Ju-on (The Grudge) (2003) - I never really understood what was going on in this Japanese horror and found it more comical than scary.
Average
King Kong (2005) - Despite the spectacular cinematography/CG imagery, Jackson's version somehow falls short on drama and lacks the wonder and awe of the 1933 original.
Average
Halloween (1978) - While impressive for its budget, I just didn't find this classic horror flick to be scary or even interesting. The Michael Myers character showed potential but we never understand him enough to be truely afraid.
Average
Thief (1981) - Watchable, but somewhat dated, crime thriller from Michael Mann - with a freakish Tangerine Dream soundtrack.
Average
All the Pretty Horses (2000) - A miscast Matt Damon bumbles his way through what would otherwise have been a good film, had it not lacked all sense of emotional connection.
Average November 05
Dark City (1998) - Nice concept, but the acting and effects pulled it down to B-grade sci-fi with a complete lack of atmosphere.
Average October 05
How to Get Ahead in Advertising (1989) - Richard E. Grant plays an advertising executive in this off-the-wall dark comedy that at times gets a little bit too silly with the satire.
Average
Nueve reinas (Nine Queens) (2000) - Two con artists try to swindle a stamp collector. I was dissappointed by its predictability and it just came off as a David Mamet rip off. However, it's an important film for Argentina and worth seeing for the cultural representation.
Average
One False Move (1992) - Early Billy Bob Thornton - drug deal goes bad flick.
Average
Dawn of the Dead (2004) - I'm always going to be hard on the horror/zombie genre. This was an entirely watchable film, but was horribly miscast and some of the scenes were just silly.
Average
Mona Lisa Smile (2003) - Julia Roberts plays a meddling know it all professor in the 50's who ends up ruining the lives of everyone around her.
Average
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) - The premise of a 70's newsroom was ripe for clever satire, however despire many laugh-out-loud moments it never reaches the next level of intellegent comedy.
Average
Girlfight (2000) - Girl trains as a boxer and deals with all the issues with her family and relationships. Despite atttempting a realistic portrayal, I found it lacking in genuine emotion.
Average
The Interpreter (2005) - Haven't we seen enough drawn out thrillers leading to a thwarted assasination attempt? I'm starting to tire of Sean Penn. It looks like he phoned this one in.
Average September 05
City By The Sea (2002) - "By-the-numbers" crime drama sorely lacking in sincerity - not even De Niro could redeem it.
Average
Bad Santa (2003) - "I think I turned a corner today". Not everything I had hoped for from Ghost World director Terry Zwigoff. Some great moments though, and well worth a look.
Average
Bring It On (2000) - It's a fun popcorn teen movie, but ultimately vacuous.
Average
The Good Girl (2002) - Fairly unconvincing film which appears to be riding on the last wave of Generation X angst. Could have been more.
Average
The Ladykillers (2004) - Plenty of style, but no substance in this below par Coen brothers remake of the 1955 classic.
Average
Super Size Me (2004) - A fairly basic documentary outlining obesity in America. Seriously overrated and somewhat devoid of a point.
Average August 05
The Last Samurai (2003) - Does not have the credibility to stand up as a classic epic warrior battle. Watchable, but not exceptional, and Cruise is unconvincing in this role.
Average
Missing (1982) - It might sound cold but I found myself unsympathetic to the protagonist's battle among political turmoil of Chile, despite being based on a true story. However, on the whole, a well put together film.
Average
Le Mépris (Contempt) (1963) - I'm not a huge fan of Jean-Luc Godard - but it's all a bit too pretentious at times. I realise it's a classic but even the presence of Brigitte Bardot and Jack Palance didn't make it much easier to watch.
Average
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) - Not the dissapointment I expected. Mostly faithful to the Terminator premise but does get beyond silly in places where its predecessors stayed in control.
Average
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002) - All the required elements were there for a great film, but something was missing. Either it needed to take itself seriously or throw in more humor.
Average
It's All About Love (2003) - Follow up film from Festen director Thomas Vinterberg which unfortunately does not deliver the goods. The sci fi bits don't make a lot of sense in the context of the film and the story really goes nowhere.
Average
Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle (2004) - It may very well be above average the teen comedy genre, but it could have been more consistently funny and a LOT more original.
Average July 05
Dead End (2003) - Intriguing low budget horror/thriller road movie. While the twist is apparant well before the end, the light humour makes it a worthwhile viewing.
Average
War of the Worlds (2005) - Nothing new here, which is a shame because the potential was enormous. Industry leading special effects count for nothing when the script is lacking emotion and life.
Average
The Corporation (2003) - Heavily one-sided look at the rise of the Corporate entity in society from a socialist agenda. Part of a trend in leftist documentaries which fail to provide balance, and preach only to the converted and ignorant.
Average
Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003) - Weak on script and soul, this third installment of Robert Rodriguez's 'El Mariachi' series simply fails to engage and entertain.
Average June 05
The Untouchables (1987) - I hate to say this about a film with so much real talent involved, but this "classic" is highly overrated and unconvincing.
Average
Limbo (1999) - Small town Alaska, killers on the loose, trapped on an island style thriller. Doesn't quite hold it together enough to make an emotional connection.
Average May 05
Thirteen (2003) - A continuation of the American fascination with their own spiritual void and excessive culture. Some great performances, but doesn't hit hard in the way it needs to.
Average
Secret Window (2004) - Depp and Tuturro turn in great performances. But overall a very disappointing and unexceptional film - not as dark and twisty as it promised to be.
Average
Cremaster 5 (1997) - Technically, this film marks a welcome improvement in camerawork. Quite exquisite in places. Otherwise, this is the most unmemorable of the series.
Average
Cremaster 4 (1994) - The first film in the cycle to be shot. A motorcycle race and a Candidate who is tap-dancing his way through the floor.
Average April 05
Cremaster 1 (1996) - The first installment of Matthew Barney's imaginative Cremaster Cycle. Defies explaination.
Average March 05
Along Came Polly (2004) - Showed a lot of promise, but sadly over predictable and below average comedy.
Average
Meet the Fockers (2004) - A pretty weak and by-the-numbers script when compared to the original, but nonetheless entertaining enough to warrant a look.
Average January 05
Popiól i diament (Ashes and Diamonds) (1958) - I have no idea what this was about, or even if there was a plot. An odd and difficult to watch combination of direction, editing, cinematography, and acting.
Average
Ocean's Twelve (2004) - More substance and humour than the first remake, which I disliked immensely due to its smugness and weak plot. This time around the heist concept has enough twists to hold my attention.
Average
Phone Booth (2002) - Entertaining and conceptually simple thriller. The whole thing works, but the surprise ending you expect never comes.
Average December 04
The Sting (1973) - Crime comedy drama and Best Picture of 1973. Mildly engaging, but overrated.
Average
The Lion in Winter (1968) - Critically lauded tale of King Henry II whose time has come to choose his heir, and the scheming the results. The twists and turns kept my interest in a genre that typically bores me.
Average
The Commitments (1991) - Quintessentially British and therefore dreary and not as life affirming as the characters purport. Woefully overrated at #38 on the BFI 100 list.
Average November 04
The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967) - Early Polanski vampire spoof which is more unusual than funny, and is only made watchable by the presence of Sharon Tate.
Average
Sex: The Annabel Chong Story (1999) - More questions than answers in this exploitive biopic where the most disturbing aspect is her teeth.
Average October 04
Reversal of Fortune (1990) - The story of Claus von Bulow's two trials on the charge of attempting to murder his wife leaves Jeremy Irons with an Oscar and the viewer no closer to understanding exactly what happened.
Average
The Great Ziegfeld (1936) - You constantly get the feeling your not being told the full story in this overlong telling of the life of "great" showman Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr.
Average
Igby Goes Down (2002) - Elements of a well written script, but the themes of angst and desperation are given an artificial sense of superiority.
Average September 04
Children Underground (2000) - Oscar nominated documentary which follows a group of Romanian children living in a train station, collateral damage resulting from Nikolai Ceaucescu's communist regime.
Average
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004) - Not the A grade comedy we have come to expect from a film with Ben Stiller, but an entertaining popcorn flick nonetheless.
Average
Crumb (1994) - Terry Zwigoff's first film/documentary, and the missing link for further appreciating the similarly themed Ghost World and American Splendor. A disturbing and difficult to comprehend insight.
Average
Slacker (1991) - Very early work from Richard Linklater (School of Rock/Before Sunset). A sociological study of Generation X caricatures in a distinctly amateur (but watchable) film.
Average August 04
Solaris (2002) - Does not surpass Andrei Tarkovsky's existential 1972 classic, however it is still a rarity for a Hollywood film to leave you thinking.
Average
Beauty and the Beast (1991) - I expected this one to be a real chore to sit through, but was pleasantly surprised by how well animated and written it turned out to be.
Average
July 04
Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004) - The biggest surprise for me was Moore's failure to both entertain, and provide any new hard facts against Bush.
Average
Runaway Jury (2003) - Plenty of cat and mouse action in this, the best Grisham adapted thriller.
Average
Gentleman's Agreement (1947) - A little preachy in its anti-semitism message, but Gregory Peck plays the role well.
Average
Gods and Monsters (1998) - This tale of Frankenstein director, James Whale's, last days simply did not inspire interest.
Average
Brazil (1985) - I struggle to enjoy the sci-fi/fantasy genre, and regardless of how well respected this film is, I found it laborious and unmemorable.
Average
Brassed Off (1996) - Standard 'triumph-over-adversity ' tale. Not too over-sentimental to be unbearable, and redeemed by flawless performances.
Average June 04
Boys Don't Cry (1999) - I'm a stickler for films based on true events that over dramatise or distort the facts. Otherwise a great film.
Average
Frenzy (1972) - Hitchcock's second to last film. Not up to his usual standard, but worthy of a viewing.
Average
One Hour Photo (2002) - I get the feeling that if this film was made 30 years ago it would have been a gritty and shocking psychological thrilller, however today this film comes off more like a thinly layered character study.
Average
Lost in Mancha (2002) - Terry Gilliam's aborted attempt to bring the story of Don Quixote to film. Finally something to put the Warrior's season into perspective.
Average
Sweet Home Alabama (2002) - Just fulfilling my Reese Witherspoon quota for the month.
Average May 04
Heaven (2002) - Enjoyed this Kieslowski written, Tykwer directed drama, but Cate Blanchett could have looked more interested in being in it.
Average
8 Mile (2002) - Every bit as mediocre as I expected.
Average
Live Forever (2004) - This affectionate autopsy of the Brit Pop phenonmenon in the 90's is rendered highly amusing thanks to some frank and bizarre interviews with the major players of the era.
Average
Seabiscuit (2003) - A little over sentimental for my taste.
Average April 04
Stand and Deliver (1988) - File under the 'Inspirational Teacher' genre of films.
Average
Small Faces (1996) - Typical 'coming of age' story set in Glasgow during the late sixties. Well crafted, but a little disjointed.
Average
The Madness of King George (1994) - I've never been one for British period dramas, particularly royal history, nonetheless my interest was held until the end.
Average March 04
Grand Hotel (1932) - Dated, but still watchable classic - one of the earliest recipients of the Best Picture Oscar.
Average
The Long Good Friday (1980) - I've never thought much of Bob Hoskins style (Felicia's Journey could have been so much more), and he feels out of place in this otherwise great English gangster flick.
Average February 04
The Great Dictator (1940) - Legendary Chaplin film - did not enjoy this as much as The Gold Rush
Average
The Ipcress File (1965) - Interesting little tale of counter espionage from Bond producer Harry Saltzman.
Average
A Hard Days Night (1964) - Clearly more popular for its nostalgic portrayal of The Beatles in their prime rather than any intelligent or coherant message the film may offer.
Average
Big Fish (2003) - A little over sentimental for my liking - but definitely had the Tim Burton stamp.
Average
Return of the King (2003) - The final act of the trilogy simply did not live up the the hype and I would call it the least interesting - sorely lacking both clarity and emotion.
Average
Women In Love (1969) - Heh heh, Japanese style wrestling. D. H. Lawrence you old dog.
Average January 04
West Side Story (1961) - Winner of 11 Oscars apparantly due more to the lack of competition that year than the quality of this picture.
Average
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) - The first full-length animated feature film to come out of the United States. I found it interesting that the Princess couldn't wait to ditch the dwarfs as soon as the prince shows up.
Average
Finding Nemo (2003) - Not as accessible to a wider audience as previous Pixar features, but still enjoyable.
Average
Genevieve (1953) - All through this film I was thinking how not funny and meaningless it was. Then when it ended, I understood its appeal.
Average
Tom Jones (1963) - Victorian English period piece that is kind of interesting in places. Another BFI top 100.
Average
The Dam Busters (1954) - I find British war films to be a bit stiff and over sentimental. I am particulary hard on films based on true events that manipulate the truth. This one didn't measure up for me.
Average
The Big One (1997) - Entertaining 'documentary' from America's favourite slob, Michael Moore. Similar in style and substance to Bowling for Columbine, 'The Big One' follows Moore on a book tour where he takes shots at successful businesses (including those selling his books), and suggests the average blue collar worker should refrain from working so hard so that corporations would make less money.
Average
The Grifters (1990) - A pretty uneven though entertaining film. Surely not deserving of four Oscar nominations.
Average December 03
My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) - Another grim British film about different classes and being an outsider in London during the eighties.
Average
Unfaithful (2002) - Adrian Lyne has lost some of his edge in this very average thriller.
Average November 03
Zelig (1983) - Not part of my required viewing list, but this Woody Allen film had a few genuine laughs and original ideas.
Average
Brief Encounter (1945) - Meh. I enjoyed the Rachmaninov soundtrack, and it was well directed by David Lean, but I felt nothing for the characters.
Average

Average
The Lady Killers (1955) - British heist movie where gang of thugs are wiped out by elderly landlady.
